I'm a complete travel whore fan. Given the choice between clothes and travel, or between a new car and travel, or between jewelry and travel, I will choose travel every time. And, if given the choice between mediocre sex and travel, I will choose travel. (Please note the very deliberate use of the word "mediocre". Enuf said.)
I love it - nothing makes me happier than stepping into a culture that is brand new, surrounded by people speaking a language I don't understand, with new smells, new sounds, new foods, etc. And Africa seems to be the place that turns me on the most.
I've been really fortunate in my life, and I've been able to travel quite a bit in Africa. I've been to Kenya, Zimbabwe, Morocco, Botswana, South Africa and Namibia. Would go back to each an every one of these places again in a heartbeat.
But one very IMPORTANT place I have not yet been: Ethiopia!!
So, in anticipation of my trip (someday!) to go pick up the Sproutie, I have started doing some planning. I *love* the planning part... I read travel books, I pore over maps, I google the hell out of it... for me, it's almost as much fun as the actual travel. :-)
One of my favorite resources, Budget Travel, has just published a good story on Ethiopia. You can check it out here.
They also published the fun What $100 Buys in Addis Ababa, which has got me started on shopping planning, too!!

I used to drive my mom crazy. When I was young, I saved money for a new couch about 6 times and every time I had enough for my couch, I would take a trip with the $ instead. She didn't get that the travel was way more important to me than the couch. I have great memories of the trips...I don't remember what the couch I wanted looked like. And I love the Budget Travel magazine - I finally quit subscribing when we started the adoption because I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to go anywhere other than Guatemala for awhile.
I am glad you noted mediocore...LOL
Sigh... Namibia...
I'm already trying to figure out if I can swing a winter get-away this year. A week in Cuba perhaps... (sorry, can't come to California, the Munchkin won't be a Canadian citizen yet so travel to the US is out).
Add pottery to your shopping list too! And coffee, for yourself or for gifts.
Haha, I could take a page from your "book!"
I hear you on the travel planning pleasure. I'm not into having a heavily scheduled agenda while I'm there, but I get pretty obsessed trying to figure out as much as I can about a place before I go. I'm psyched about the links you posted. Thanks alot!

We are very alike! I will never understand why people spend every penny they have - eating out all the time, buying endless clothes and furniture etc and then saying "it's nice for some to be able to afford to travel" it is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves. The world is there to explore I am always shocked at how few people do...
I've kinda, sorta been to Ethiopia in a remote type of way. Evidently Cleveland is the sister city of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
You have been to some great places. I love travelling when I do it but just never seem to make the time to do it more often. Definitely my loss.
Cleveland = Ethiopia. Tasha, you are funny!
p.s. Re: the 'mediocre sex' - I would rather slit my wrist with a plastic knife than endure THAT ever again...sorry, my own issues...
