out of sight, out of mind.

Went to IKEA today for a bit o' shopping.

That, in and of itself, is not very newsworthy. What is perhaps newsworthy about today's outing is what I bought: a crib for Sprout!

This is the one I bought - it's simple, but still a tiny bit girly (see the curvy end bits. But it is not, you know, foofey. Or over-the-top girly. For Pete's sake, people, it's basically a prison device for children - how girly do you want it to be?

I'm kind of freaked out by some of the girl's rooms I've seen in catalogs and magazines lately. I refuse to have an all-pink girly-girl disney princess room. That much pink, or pretty much any amount of pastel, makes me want to projectile vomit. And I think we can all agree that only one member of a family should be expected to be capable of projectile vomiting at any time.

So, anyway, I've been thinking that Sprouty's room will be mostly white, but maybe with a nice shot of bright orange here and there. Not sure about that, but if I still to white furniture, it gives me lots of flexibility on the design.

Anyway, the point, is: Yikes! I actually bought my first real kid thing!

I mean, I've bought a few items of clothing, but those can be put away (and after a quick wash, they have been) so they are out of sight. And out of sight is out of mind. And that is kind of nice in a way - this wait time is so long that I can (almost) go for several days without thinking about it much.

But, now I have a big box full o' crib in my bedroom. Once I assemble this bad boy, there is going to be constant visual reminder of my wait.

Should I leave it in the box?

Congrats on the purchase of your socially acceptable child cage.

I have been looking at mine in all it's glory for 18 months now. The cat loves it. I don't mind having it up but everyone is different on that front.

I hear ya on the no 'sea of pink' room. Barbies and frou-frou..eek! My big girl furniture for the girlness is white too. Always fresh and very versatile.

It is a good simple crib. I know a lot of folks who bought that same one.

I am not into pink crap everywhere. It is a bit much.

Hi. I have read your blog for awhile, but have never posted. The girly girl room subject has moved me to comment. :) I am a singleton waiting for my Ocotber 11 court date (woo hoo) for my little lady. I, too, struggled with the pink room dilemma. I settled on a crayon theme. Pink is represented but is not the dictator of her room. Oh, I got a floor model, already assembeled crib that I can not fit in my front door, so her bed is in the garage for the moment. :)

Honestly, I found it really hard to have visual baby cues around my house until I had an idea of when she might come home. But, that said, my husband thought it would take him an hour to put together the crib and she slept in the pack n play for 2 weeks after she was home because he took it out of the box and then walked away because there were too many parts.

And I'm with you on the nursery thing. Everyone kept asking me what my theme was. They couldn't believe I didn't have a theme. I just told them it was going to be colorful and left it at that. We have a colorful Guatemalan quilt on one wall and I blew up and framed some nature photos I took on 2 other walls. Her crib bumper and quilt are rather girly but they were a gift and I figured what the heck.

Put it together! Visual reminder of the wait is also a visual reminder of your BABY TO BE! :)

Wow! Tough question. We put the crib up right after we got home from meeting Alexander. We had the room all painted and such before going to meet him. So lets see...15 months of staring at an empty and decorated room with 1 month of that with the door closed. If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure what I'd pick. I liked the visual that there would be a baby in there some day, but that's not to say that I didn't go in there and bawl my eyes out on occasion.

Hey! You bought a sprouty thing!!!

Knowing that you're planning to use a cosleeper in the beginning, you can always wait for a bit to set it up. On the other hand, it's much easier to set up a crib for a baby without the actual baby in attendance, so maybe set it up once you've got the bedding. Orange--I love it!!!

I'm so excited about your purchase!! It's a crib I have also considered. My 2-cents: put it up sooner rather than later. I know that I want to have signs of a baby around my house to help me visualize my daughter and how our lives are going to be. I think it's a really personal choice.

I am painting the nursery next month (yellow) because I'm having the house painted. I'll add pink accents. It doesn't take a lot of pink to make a great impact. White and orange sounds lovely & fresh. With a white background you have a ton of choices & can easily change it up over the years.

NO! Trust me, cribs are murderous to set up. Get it up now, when there is no pressure and you aren't feeling stressed out about the million other things you have to do before you leave to pick up Sprout!

That's a great crib. Having installed many an Ikea item, I hope the instructions are good to you.

I'm not big on pink either but unfortunately the wallpaper that I love is pink and white! Yikes...I'm probably going to balance it out with a black crib and orange and black accents...I know it sounds crazy but anything to get away from the pink. It is really fun though it has donkeys on it! LOL Imagine that! LOL

Nice crib! I applaud your willingness to commit. I couldn't buy a single baby item until after we got our referral and even then didn't buy more than a couple of things until after our court date!

That said, I did already have 2 kids so we were set for things like cribs, rockers, bouncy seats, etc. Even with having all that lined up the last few weeks before we left were crazy trying to get all the things we needed pulled together at the last minute.

Only you know how crazy staring at that crib will make you when you have been waiting for a referral for weeks longer than you thought you would.

love it! i'm pink-less in d2b's room. of course, the chocolate brown wallpaper that landlord put up in this "western standard" flat helps. we're green/blue/purple over here. LOVE your orange and white idea.

i like having d2b's room ready. i nap in there...and sometimes head in for a good cry.
