analyze this
WOW! Now someone please tell me why I would ever pay big $$ to a therapist when I can get all my problems analyzed and resolved here in my comments box?
So, regarding yesterday’s post... Clare's comment hit the nail quite squarely on the head: I'm still feeling guilty. (Clare, you are good.)
I didn't really realize it until fatwonkkid (who I don’t know, and who is probably a very nice person in real life, so please whoever you are, please don’t take this personally) made the less-than-empathetic comment that (rephrased slightly) he would never have checked his valuable camera gear.
This is the same response two other people on my trip made to me immediately afterward, when I was still smarting from the loss. Which, of course, only serves to make me feel MUCH WORSE.
Seriously, how is this kind of response helpful in any way? Are you trying to point out that you are smarter that I am? That you are better at taking care of your stuff? Well, duh!! I’m the moron who put the camera in my checked baggage, and who therefore lost it. Do you think I don’t realize now that it was incredibly stupid? Geez.
Anyway, that comment, which refreshed my guilty feelings, combined with Clare’s excellent insight (and reminder that a camera is just a tool), has made me realize that I'm just punishing myself by not replacing it. You know that old "if you can't take care of your things, maybe you don't deserve them" refrain that we got from our parents? Well, it appears that I heard it big time.
And a harsh part of me (let's call her Sternita, shall we?) apparently thinks that I should live without for a while, perhaps to teach me a lesson or something. But I'd like to say that Sternita is being just about as insensitive as the "I would never have done such a dumb thing" people are. And she is also not perceiving that I have learned the lesson.
But, now that I have a little more clarity (and consciousness) about the whole thing, I’m going to get over it, get myself a new camera, and get on with my life. Thank you ALL -- yes, this means you, too, fatwonkkid -- for the insight.
(And, Sternita, I promise to be very, very, VERY careful with it.)

You did what you thought was best at the time. I'm happy you are getting another camera! After all I want to see pictures of sprout (even if they aren't posted on the blog! lol)

i wasn't trying to say i was smarter than you, i was just pointing out my paranoia and general distrust for people when it comes to my stuff.
to illustrate this "fantastic quality" of mine, whenever I leave my computer at work, even though it is to go to the bathroom, i lock my computer.
if i were to get gas at the gas station, and i have to go in to pay, i will lock my car, even though i am 10 feet away and only in there fore 2 minutes.
at least on the brighter side, it sounds like you are going to get a camera upgrade. that and i have a feeling that you will be taking better pictures after this ordeal.
Good decision! Can't wait to see the pics with the new fangled thing-a-ma-bob!
hee hee... Sternita. I am sooooo calling you that from now on.... ;)
